Five Reasons Why You Should Be Your Own Interior Designer

If there is any takeaway from the pandemic, it is that the more things you can do yourself, the better.

I have friends who learned how to do their own manicure, cook their own food, tend to their own garden.  All skills that are easy to learn and make an enormous difference in their lives and save a lot of money.

I would say decorating your house is the same.  You can save so much more money and learn how to decorate yourself.

Here are the top five seasons why you should decorate your own home:

1) It's fun

Unless you are one of those people who hates shopping (who are these people?), shopping for home furnishings and decorative items is as much fun as shopping for clothes and shoes, if not more.  Nothing is more thrilling than finding a pedigree chair at an estate sale for a song or spending hours walking through designer showrooms searching for that perfect fabric for your couch.  The internet makes so many resources available now, especially for lines that were previously accessible only to -the-trade.  Now you can walk into any showroom as they are open to the public.  There are tons of resources online where you can get inspiration such as Pinterest, Instagram and so on. 

2) No one knows your style more than you

Only you would know exactly what you want and what you feel.  Only you can know what fits your personality and what doesn't.  When you decorate your own home, it is an opportunity for you to express your style.  Your space is the most personal, intimate expression of yourself.

3) It's a skill that can be learned.

Taste is something that can be acquired, absolutely.  The more you expose yourself to good designs, the more refined your taste will become.  It's like wine. You might start out drinking white zinfandel, but as you taste more wine and be more exposed to great wines, your taste will elevate immensely.

4) It's freedom

When you know how to do something yourself, it will liberate you.  It allows you to do things at your pace, buy things without pressure, and most of all, it gives you the freedom to do whatever you want, when you want.  That is the best thing of all.

5) You can save a lot of money.

Without question doing this yourself will save you a lot of money on fees and markup.  There are many resources where you can buy directly as a consumer or use a buying service at low markup.
